"The scenery there
is as if fake k", Min prattled. My cousin was there some years back. Having searched for an ideal package, we finally decided
to visit Yunnan – An eight days tour to Kunming, Dali and Lijiang. We wanted something rustic, something magnificent.
Situated in
Southwestern China, the size of Yunnan province is about 394,000 square kilometers, accounting for 4.1% of China’s total
land territory and ranking the eighth in China. (Source:Newsgd.com)
Myanmar is in the
West, while Laos and Viet Nam in the South. Come to think of it, this sole immense portion of China is enough to cover the
whole of Malaysia (329,750 square kilometers).
It’s a hilly
area. A plateau and mountainous terrain, Yunnan belongs to the southward extension part of Qing-Zang. With an average elevation
of approximately 2000m, the highest peak is 6740m while the low stands at 76.4m. There are all together 25 ethnic nationalities here, totaling a huge sum of 43 million citizens. The Yi nationality enjoys the largest population followed by other minorities
including the Bai, Dai and Zhuang. They have different titles to address men and women. I had a hard time juggling between
these, especially without a notebook and worst, my ability to digest only 60% of tongue-twisting, deep deep Chinese pronunciation.
Anyway, I’d managed:
- In Kunming : Guys
are called Ahei Ge, girls are called Ashima.
- In Dali : Guys
are called Apeng Ge, girls are called Jin Hua.
- In Lijiang : Guys
are called Pang Jin Ge, girls are called Pang Jin Mei.
There are interesting
stories behind this. Will spill to you what I remember as we move along. Now, let’s start touring!
